The new 500m2
workshop is located at Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Base Ohakea. Development of the facility involved provision of services to a remote part of the base, formation of an access road and service yards for heavy goods vehicles, together with earthworks to form a drainage swale and berm.
The swale and berm enabled cost savings, as well as landscape features to be formed on site. This work involved obtaining a Resource Consent with Horizons Regional Council and delivering earthworks monitoring throughout the contract.
The building is a light industrial portal frame structure and comprises three workshops, one of which is fitted with a gantry crane, and another which is fitted out for handling hazardous materials. An office and amenity area is located alongside the main building for administrative support.
The building has been fitted with lightning protection, aircraft obstruction lights, an earth bonding system throughout.
Calibre was the lead consultant throughout the design, documentation and construction stages and provided project management, structural and civil engineering.
Fire design was done by Holmes Fire & Safety, mechanical and electrical engineering by eCubed and architecture by Tse Architects. The building was completed in February 2016 and within budget.
